Flutter Entertainment, one of the biggest gaming companies in the UK, confirmed the hiring of former Labor Party deputy leader Tom Watson as its new advisor on safer gambling and further corporate social responsibility directives.
“In taking on this role in Flutter, I intend to get under the bonnet of the business – and the industry more widely – to understand how best to further develop and implement industry leading responsible gambling policies,” he commented.
Watson, resigned from the Labour Party last November, is often considered one of the leading reformists of the UK gambling sector. In June 2019, he had drafted plans for a radical overhaul of the UK gambling industry, in which he initiated setting up a ‘gambling ombudsman’ to protect customers. Watson was also critical of the industry’s relationship with football and invited licensed UK betting firms to donate £100 million towards problem gambling treatment research.
“We have to work harder than ever before to find a way to continue to bring great products and brands to our customers while always having the need to protect the vulnerable clearly in mind,” added Peter Jackson, CEO of Flutter.
